The Ilium Framework tm

An Architecture-driven Rapid Application Development Environment for developing Network-Centric Systems.

The Ilium Frameworktm is envisioned, and has been developed, as a prototype architecture-driven, concept, design and evaluation environment for network-centric systems. The environment is designed to support continuous distributed collaboration among project “stakeholders” and multi-disciplinary analysis, design and development teams.

Ilium is constructed as a computational space that allows key stakeholders to collaborate in developing, evaluating and formalizing critical decisions about complex military systems, described as architecture models.

Ilium provides a flexible distributed simulation environment that will accommodate a wide range of “pluggable” simulations and design tools to support appropriate representation and assessment of the system under consideration - and associated operations concepts - as an “executable” architecture. Object oriented architectures, at a level of detail appropriate to the actual evaluation task, are constructed from an extendable library of domain models and design patterns, in a manner consistent with the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DODAF). These models are then used to rapidly configure a user-selected set of distributed simulations and data analysis tools. Individuals, or teams of stakeholders and engineers, may then exercise the architecture in specified scenarios, and assess the results using a variety of visualization and data analysis tools. These assessments are thus recorded and formalized as dynamic system requirements that illustrate both constraints on system design as well as the operational goals they support.
